We have just returned home from a week in Salt Lake City (SLC), Utah and wanted to share some of the highlights of our visit with you. To preface this we want you to know that we love to ski and first visited SLC in 1989 when we traveled for a family week of skiing. Peter combined the trip with a Continuing Medical Education course entitled, “Emergency Orthopedics”, apropos for a ski resort. Since that time we have returned frequently to enjoy Utah’s “Champagne Powder”.
Over the past 16 years we have added a summer trip for the Annual Convention of USANA Health Sciences. While there we learn the latest in the science of nutrition from world renowned experts such as Dr. Libby Weaver, reconnect with old friends and spend time hiking and exploring the canyons in the Wasatch Mountains.
This year we were pleased to locate City Creek Canyon which leads from just north of the state capital building winding 14.5 miles up the canyon. There is great hiking and biking with views of the city and the surrounding countryside. During our venture we quite forgot how close we actually were to SLC.
A most affirming moment during Convention came when we met Amy Purdy backstage after her speech.
As you may know Amy Purdy is a double below the knee amputee. An avid snowboarder Amy fell severely ill to meningitis at the age of 19. So ill in fact that amputation of both lower legs was required to save her life. After recovering from her acute illness she fell into a deep depression but ultimately was able to pull herself out of the doldrums and become an American actress, model, world-class snowboarder and 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist, co-founder of Adaptive Action Sports, professional motivational speaker, Finalist in “Dancing with the Stars” TV Show, clothing designer and author of her inspirational biography, “On My Own Two Feet”, soon to be released in paperback. The word that we feel best expresses her is resilience.
USANA NEW “SMART” FOODS
While attending the USANA Convention we were introduced to their newest products called SMART Foods. The New Food products consist of shakes and bars and are called SMART because they are:
Simple and pure
Advanced fats (Coconut Oil)
These new SMART Foods are made from naturally derived ingredients with names you can pronounce. The ingredients create a beneficial balance of macronutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. And there’s no added sugar, which supports a low-glycemic impact on your body. Each serving contains 18 grams of protein, 8 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of fat—mainly from coconut oil—with 0 grams of sugar and only 150 calories. In addition you have three choices of protein base: plant (pea and potato), soy and whey to fit most dietary needs.
Dr. Mehmet Oz
Dr. Oz spoke at the USANA International Convention for the fourth time on Health and Happiness. USANA Health Sciences is a Trusted Partner and Sponsor of the Dr. Oz show in which a USANA product is highlighted every few weeks.
USANA has over 750 world class athletes using its products to improve their health and performance. World-class competitors understand the importance of good nutrition, which is why so many elite athletes trust their health to USANA.
Champions for Change 5K
Every year on Saturday morning at the USANA International Convention we run a 5K to benefit USANA True Health Foundation.
The mission of the USANA True Health Foundation is to provide the most critical human necessities—nutrition, clothing, shelter, medical assistance, and health education—to those who are suffering or in need.
This year we raised more than $150,000 at the Champions for Change 5K. Joining the run this year was Amy Purdy and Dr. Oz who entertained all with a bit of “Dancing with the Stars” during the After Party.
Dr. Oz and Amy Purdy run in USANA’s Champions for Change 5K.
